Greenland

2013

pinhole images
9 x 20 cm

These images were taken in Qaanaaq and Siorapaluk in Greenland. Siorapaluk is the furthest northern continously inhabited settlement in the world. Qaanaaq is also the location of Thule, a U.S. army’s northernmost Air Base, located 750 miles north of the Arctic Circle. In the 1960s Thule was the site of an aircraft accident involving a United States Air Force B-52 bomber. The bomber crashed onto sea ice in North Star Bay near Thule, causing explosives aboard to detonate and the nuclear payload to disperse, which resulted in radioactive contamination.

Thule's arctic environment includes icebergs in North Star Bay, a polar ice sheet, and Wolstenholme Fjord, the only place on earth where three active glaciers join together.
